Why I Love Church (by Tim LaTour)

Sundays are so great! They really are. I have the wonderful privilege and joy getting to see the many aspects of our church week in and week out. Here’s a fun little snapshot:

At 6:30am (yes, you read that correctly) our sound team shows up open doors, turn on lights and sound equipment. At 7am, the volunteers on the worship team arrive and (starting with prayer and fellowship) begin to rehearse the songs for Sunday. At around 8am, the coffee corner and baking teams arrive to get their respective services ready. At 8:25am, the production volunteers are set and ready to meet to discuss the services. From about 8:30 am to 9:00 am, various volunteers from ushers to greeters to Kid’s Club teachers begin arriving and getting ready. At 9:05am, volunteers, pastors and other staff join to pray for the 8 services we’ll be having that day. At 9:25am, the countdown video begins and we’re 5 minutes from worshiping together as a family.

From then until about 9pm or 10pm every Sunday, 633 King’s Road (and 321 Java Rd) is buzzing with electricity. First, Second and Tenth floors are full with the church hungry for time with God. The ninth floor is full of tiny feet running to colorful rooms to learn more about Jesus. The eighth floor is filled with classes and studies with folks digging deeper into the Bible. The day-long fellowship and praise of our Filipino ministry is going strong. Meanwhile, our prayer room is occupied all day with people seeking God’s face through prayer. Right across the street at The Studio, hundreds of teenagers are worshipping together with full hearts. Also, during the day, impromptu meetings, reunions, handshakes, high-fives, prayers, and hugs, are frequently seen as life happens on this sabbath day.

There is tons more that I haven’t mentioned here, but all in all, Sunday is my absolute favorite day of the week!

I love the music and the sound that comes out of those big black speakers. I love the coffee that is readily available. I love the stage on the first floor. I love seeing volunteers getting ready for their roles in Quench before the services. I love the smiles that greet me as I walk into the sanctuary. I love our bulletins. I love the laughter I hear on every floor. I love the crowded lifts filled with friends. I love the screaming kids on the ninth floor (three of them are mine!). I love seeing families worshipping together on the tenth floor. I love the buzz on the ground floor after each service. I love the smell of the food the lovely Filipino ladies prepare. I love seeing people on their way to mission trip planning meetings. I love the videos. I love the reconnections that happen every week.

I could go on forever…really.

But what I love the most is that people are opening their hearts to God and to each other every week. I hear tremendous testimonies of amazing things God is doing in people’s lives. I see people who are learning how to trust God more.

People come to church to be real. Real with God and real with each other. And I absolutely love that!

Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Hebrews 10:23-25

I wish there was a way to capture all of the excitement at Island ECC somehow. For now, I think I’ll just keep coming back every Sunday to get more. ;)
